Granted, it's not for everyone. My friend complained about the excessive heat, something I've never noticed nor felt there. But I've never had an uncomfortable experience in this theater. It has a great modern feel to it. It has been one of my favorite theaters in the city ever since I first went there to see Wedding Crashers in 2. Keep up the great work! This is definitely the dingiest theater I've ever been to; I was really confused and surprised when I walked in. Raymond later told me that we had to come here because La La Land is an indie film, so it's not showing at all the big theaters. A blast of an unpleasant smell hit me as soon as we entered, but it thankfully did not follow us into the theater itself. Once I was actually watching the movie, I didn't have any issues; the armrests are retractable, so plus one for the couple- friendly seating. I was reasonably comfortable when I was sitting and La La Land blew me away, so I stopped thinking about the state of the theater soon after it started. I've experienced better. Yes it's old, and yes it doesn't have great food options, but who cares about that? What I care about is to be able to watch a movie comfortably enough that you can forget about your surroundings and just think about the movie. First of all it's really hot. I don't know if they are trying to save up on electricity, but me and my friends were sweating. The screen is really tiny, so unless you seat in the front, you cant see all that well. Lastly, the volume was low. It was hard to hear frankly. The problem is that there arent that many options around the area, so if you live near by, you are stuck with this place. It was any ol cinema. Well, to be honest when we went in the theatre looks desolate. It was eerily quiet, empty and there was a tiny concession stand to my left. I was starving and looking forward to some food! Every theatre nowadays has great food options. Errrrr... not this place. Popcorn, nachos and hotdogs that look old. I know what you're thinking: . Plus the tickets were $1. That's a little pricey for a place that looks just meh. I saw La La Land and I loved the movie. That's the only good thing from tonight. The theatre in itself was dirty. Did they even clean before the new showtime? I think not. This is a bizarre theater. We came here about 3. It doesn't have stadium seating which is challenging with small kids. African tribe chief: Tarzan.. The environment looks so small, unlike the one at college point multiplex and its not like those old fashioned theaters like RKO Keith's and Jackson triplex cinemas. It's plain, dull, and modern. For example, when I was watching . I hope the manager should augment the screens for those four theaters. In other words; make it more like IMAX please!! Also, When I was watching . I couldn't concentrate the movie because of this, but I assumed that person forgot to turn it off or disobey the rules. Also, the audience should keep their mouth shut and laugh in their head, but they have to remember to turn off their i. Phones or Samsung Galaxys. Living in this neighborhood and being unemployed equals find cheap movies. Especially in winter or on a rainy day! For a while this theater offered the cheaper option. Just do their job and get back to chatting with each other. The theater sometimes concerns me as far as cleanliness. I try not to look to close! The neighborhood has plenty of dining options for before or after a movie. I personally would not buy food at this theater. I wait until after the show. Let me know what you think...: )The theatre is alright. The seats have been upgraded since those that were in the photos from 2. I'd hope every theatre these days have newer and more comfortable seats than what was in those pictures. No apology for the inconvenience or that she had been the one who directed us to the theater and that the sign on the entrance was marked for the movie we paid to see. I live in the Upper East Side so this City Cinemas is one of my home theaters. The actual theater is fine but the problem is the staff are not pleasant and if there is a movie starting at 1. So you are forced to wait until they have set everything up to let you in. Then you are rushed to your seat and often can't buy anything from that concession stand because no one is there. Management needs to get it together. Went for a Friday 3. Theater seems like it was renovated not long ago. Areas were clean - bathrooms, theater, concessions. I liked that there were only a handful of people at the time, it was quite. We only interacted with one staff member when he took our ticket, he was friendly enough but didn't crack a smile when we joked with him : ( . I wouldn't go out of my way to return. What a brilliant idea! It's very average with other theater experiences but no complaints about that. On a recent weeknight we did 'dinner and a movie' and ended up here to see 'Gold'. We have never had a problem with the staff, however this night the young man taking tickets told me I could not bring my doggie bag into the theater, citing 'no outside food'. I explained that we had already eaten and it was simply leftovers, but he persisted in denying us entry unless I left my bag at the front counter to retrieve when we left. I wasn't feeling like a drawn out confrontation so didn't request a manager, but I'm not going to leave my bag unattended for over 2 hours and still want it, so we took a hit on about $2. And what do I see when I get inside; that's right, 2 people eating outside food, one a prepackaged salad from Fairway Market and the second an employee eating from a similar package! Next time I'll get the manager... I was hesitant to come here because of all the bad reviews, but it's actually not bad. The seats were comfortable enough for me and it was not dirty as I thought it would be. The movie selection is limited, but the matinee pricing was great. There were concession discounts and I really enjoyed movie. Overall, an okay experience. I'm not one to simply write a bad review for the fun of it, actually I use Yelp most of the time to write good reviews because I don't think people leave positive reviews enough. Unfortunately, many people only write reviews when they have a bad experience. This is why I'm writing this review today. I've been to almost every AMC, Regal, United Artists, and Bow Tie Cinemas in the city. This theatre isn't horrible. As in, the screen is decent, and the seats are actually pretty comfortable. But the employees I've encountered miserable people. I walked up to buy my ticket, no one was at the counter outside. Waited a minute or so and a girl walked up. I said hi, she barely responded, didn't smile, basically didn't emote at all. Her only emotion was seeming miserable honestly. I asked how her day was, she seemed pretty miserable also, answered me and I went on my way. I've worked in retail and customer service my entire life, and get you cant be happy all the time especially if you're crazy busy - - but they were not. The movie I was in had 8 people watching it. Now, I'm not someone who uses a bathroom at a coffee shop unless I'm buying something or use an outlet if I'm not giving business to the establishment. I don't know why but that stuff buys me when people do it. But I figured, well I see a plug, I have to stand here to wait. Almost no other customers are in the building, and I did purchase I ticket (was thinking about purchasing food/drink). Not as horrendous as some of the other Upper East Side theaters, but nowhere as good as the major chain theaters. The seating situation is especially worthless if you get stuck near some crusty old ladies, which is about 9. You've never heard so much shushing before the trailers are even done. Inexplicably though, this location only has refills on popcorn and not on soda. They need to get on that self- serve soda like their sister theaters. The little brother to the Loews Orpheum just around the corner, City Cinemas was not crowded, had no lines for popcorn and empty seats on an opening night. The staff is fairly non- existent and when you do see someone, they will gruffly take your order, scan your ticket and will not respond if you tell them to have a good night. I'd tell you about how it's overpriced, but if you've ever been to a movie theater in NYC, you already know. Eat a lot beforehand, you can make it for 2 hours without starving, I promise. The rows are actually angled at an up- slant when you walk into the theater, meaning the further back you sit, the harder it will be to see. Was it opposite day when the engineer designed these plans? Very small and cramped and if you visit after a G- rated movie has just ended, you'll probably end up in a stall with a small child on your lap. Where are their leashes, parents??? If I could, I'd give it 3. It was the late showing at 1. I know, but still. It seems to be the kind of theater where you can go as the movie is starting and easily get a seat, whereas most of the theaters I frequent (specifically AMC Loews Lincoln Square and IFC Center) commonly fill up and sell out by the time the previews have begun. So City Cinemas was a nice change of pace, where getting there the same amount of time early as I normally do, my girlfriend and I got our pick of where to sit. And the concessions we bought were fine. I appreciate that they're one of the last theaters in town still playing St. Vincent, which my girlfriend and I liked a lot. They do seem to have a good movie selection. It's a tough business to be in when you're competing with the big dogs, like AMC and Regal. The rooms aren't large or ascending but there are enough seats where you're not on top of other patrons. You won't be able to move your arm rest or recline your seat, however. Expensive for crap that's not all that great for you. There haven't been any major changes to this theater.
